Joel
Turner & The Modern Day Poets
Origins:
Joel, big brother Tim and cousin Chris all grew up in single
parent homes and although their upbringing was hard financially,
they grew up surrounded by their loving mothers and siblings
and immersed them selves in a world of music.
Joel
had a natural gift for music which his mother nurtured by letting
him take guitar lessons from local members of her church and
he has developed as a very accomplished guitarist.
He also began drum lessons but without a drum kit of his own.
He therefore developed a technique for remembering drum patterns
by copying them vocally. He didn’t know that what he was
doing was known as Beat Boxing or that in 2004 he would be instrumental
in presenting this art form to Australia.

DEBUT
ALBUM : JOEL TURNER AND THE MODERN DAY POETS
Produced
by Joel Turner and Steve Scanlon
Album featuring Anthony "The Man" Mundine (yes that’s
right – the boxer), Axle Whitehead (Australian Idol, Video
Hits) and Rebekah LaVauney (Australian Idol).
A stunning debut album which features a range of songs written
by Joel, Chris and Tim (with a couple of co-writes with others)
which demonstrates that Joel’s beatbox skills can be employed
way beyond a novelty. His strong and imaginative beats (and
accomplished guitar playing) lay the groundwork for some powerful
songs which combine hiphop with a range of other styles (rock,
funk, scat singing etc).
